The Mystical Marriage

A wedding ceremony marks a deep lifetime commitment. There is a profound mystical aspect to a marriage which has been recognized in many cultures, including Judaism and Christianity. In the biblical sense, a wedding ceremony is the merging  of two souls or, on a spiritual level, it is the merging of male and female energies. Many people today consider marriage as a strong intimate bond between two people of any gender and creed.

Because of this merging, you will feel intense closeness and intimacy with your beloved as your souls bond during the service. You will look at your beloved and see yourself in him/her just as your beloved will look at you and recognize a part of him/her in you. Indeed, you will truly feel one with your soul mate.

The Hebrew Term for Marriage

The early biblical Hebrew expression of marriage is “Davek” (Genesis chapter 2 verse 24), a word which means to come together as one or to merge. This term reflects the joining of two loving souls. In the Jewish tradition, in fact, the soul is not complete until it finds its soul mate.

In the Jewish and interfaith wedding ceremonies we celebrate the union between two people as was ordained by God. As clergy, we simply carry out God’s divine plan for the betterment of the world.   

In a non-denominational, non- religious wedding it is the spiritual merging of the souls which is being celebrated.
